Roads Never Travelled

This project comments on the curated lives we inhabit on social media and how images have become a way for us to actively communicate and associate with the world. However, this reality is skewed to showcase our idealized self. Using photographs posted on Instagram questions this glamorous digital identity and addresses the consequences of believing in often fabricated and altered life experiences. Recreating scenic landscapes and picturesque images from discarded and found objects in domestic environments also talks about how our projected reality may be different from our actual truth, and opens up questions about the real and the fake in the current times. Using Instagram as a platform to create the work further reinforces this illusion because we scroll through content at such a speed that a viewer does not actually ‘see’ the images but briefly glances at them. This work looks at the notion of curated digital lives and how this creates unrealistic expectations and anxiety around the ideas of beauty, adventure and perfection in social media users.
