Thesis Title:
Urban Subjects: Re-centering People in the Production of Space
Project Title:
Public Plaza and Pedestrian Street
Location:
Along Bin Qasim Park, Clifton, Karachi
User Group:
General Public
This thesis arises from the understanding that production of space is an inherent creative process and the capacity to exercise this creative right lies with each individual. When space is shaped primarily by human experience, it produces varied forms of use, and thus becomes imbued with a variety of use values. In contrast, state-sanctioned mode of space production, which is legitimized under modern-day urban planning, replaces the human being as the essential subject of space with capital, alienating the primary user. Hence this project aims to counter this alienation, by imagining an alternative mode of design that attempts to once again celebrate and centralize the everyday commuter, visitor, walker and passerby.
