Thesis Title:
A SANCTUARY OF HEALING SPACES RESPONDING TO GBV SURVIVORS
Project Title:
BAB-AL-RAHAT (GATEWAY TO RELIEF)
Location:
CIVIL LINES, KARACHI
User Group:
FEMALE GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE SURVIVORS
1 in 3 women are subjected to gender-based violence (UN Women). Hence, 2,145,876 is the estimated number of potential victims of GBV in Karachi. GBV survivors comb their way out of a harrowing situation, regardless the degree of distress, these women have a shared experience, looking for sense of security, belonging, and grounding. This sets a premise for mutual bonding, hence a proposition of creating a community rather than a mere shelter deemed more justified. To relieve the women from the pressure of finding an appropriate space to live as a single woman, the project’s major program is the living facility enriched with other programs essential for healing.
