This thesis explores the idea of a dreamscape where it is least expected. The narrative of this project is spun around the nightmare associated with obtaining a mundane service. By identifying and analyzing the unpleasant experience, this thesis inspects how the act of obtaining a service can be informed and enlivened in an unreal setting.

The concept roadmap represents different interests which I started to look at in order to develop a concept for this thesis. During my initial research, I started looking at dreamlike visuals while learning more about the metaverse. That’s when I realized that I am a non-dreamer. Non-dreamers are people who don’t dream at night, and even if they do, they are almost never able to recall their dreams. Deciding that this is what I want to explore further, I started researching dreamscapes and the narratives that they are based on.
Each product has a story. When products are marketed, there is a dream that is being sold. For example, Nike has, in one of their campaigns, placed a pair of their shoes on a cloud to show that the soles are so soft that you would actually feel that you’re walking on clouds. Exploring how the narrative could be extracted from a series of products for the dreamscape that I was planning to design in my thesis, I started to look at ‘mundane’ products. Mundane means anything which lacks excitement or interest. In our surroundings, products like jhaaro, pocha etc. can be categorized as mundane. As a design activity, I chose one product (lota – the one specifically used by Hindus to perform rituals) and attempted to create a set around it to understand how the design strategy could be derived.
To get a much larger canvas to experiment on, I took forward the idea of the mundane and started looking at services which were specifically offered at civic spaces. After visiting multiple sites and looking at their programs and functions, I decided to choose the Regional Passport Office - Saddar.
The Nightmare of Visiting a Passport Office
To derive a spatial strategy, I documented the entire nightmarish process of getting a passport made in the form of mood boards.
These are series of mood boards in contrast to the ones which reflect the actual nightmare.
