Spatially breaking down the act of eating into visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile consumption. Food acts as bait while the user becomes a victim of this extended experience which elicits a craving for food through a lack of it. Food also acts as a guide while the user is navigating through the space.

This thesis looks at the experience of food consumption being more than just about biting, chewing, swallowing and digesting an item. The universal narrative of Hansel and Gretel helped explore some themes of food consumption that are intrinsic to human nature.

The themes of lack and excess of food are visible in the stark parallels that exist in our society.

This thesis aims to achieve these themes and elicit these emotions among the users through spaces that depict these ideas

The Single Fry is a Dine-in Scavenger hunt located within BBQ Tonight, a 35-year-old restaurant with a rich history of food production and consumption. It is located near Boat Basin, one of the most renowned and oldest food spots in the city. The covered area for the Single Fry includes Ground plus two floors and a roof level. (Total area: 17,750 sq. ft)

Ground Floor and Roof level Plan. Both these floors consist of programs that are not part of the hunt and are mostly only used by the staff. Section AA’ and BB’ cuts through the entire shell, showing how the first and Second floor is utilized for the hunt.

Game Mapping/ Zoning First Floor Plan Dine and Whine – An extravagant dining room with everything you need to consume the food you want except, food only exists here as holograms (visuals) and no real food ever arrives. The Menu gives you clues to exit the room.

The Single Fry Corridor – Squeeze through this congested corridor designed for the user to make effort while moving, only to find a single fry on the other end. This serving is odd and is in nowhere near sufficient for a group of 4. Smash the Trash – Use your sense of touch to find food items among the piles of trash and figure out the items’ temperature, texture etc to get out of the room.

Inconvenience Store – Chaotic signage creates a completely unorganized convenience store which makes the process of obtaining the food items you need almost impossible. Find the items on the list, scan them at the POS and get out of the room. Sweet Room – Specialization of the sweet flavor, find the odd bite-sized item that doesn’t fit in the space to get out of the room.

Spicy Room – Specialization of the spicy flavor, find the odd bite-sized item that doesn’t fit in the space to get out of the room. Bitter Room – Specialization of the bitter flavor, find the odd bite-sized item that doesn’t fit in the space to get out of the room.

Sour Room – Specialization of the sour flavor, find the odd bite-sized item that doesn’t fit in the space to get out of the room. Crawl for Small – crawl through the ramped walkway to discover another fry. Feast for the nose – A small dimly lit maze, designed to encourage the movement of the user only through the sense of smell as a delicious aroma is being emitted from an overhead suspended cloche.

Second Floor Plan Hear Here – A food street filled with the noise of different food stalls but no actual food. The user has to recognize the sound on each stall to be able to get out of the room.

Bar B Ew – This is where you find full course meals to see, touch, taste, smell and hear but, this time you have no appetite as the setting completely throws you off.

Greed and Need – An installation with an implied partition representing the two start parallels existing in our society which depict and excess and a lack of food
