IN THIS THESIS HYBRIDITY IS SEEN TO BE TWOFOLD; FIRST BY INTRODUCING A RAPIDLY EMERGING FUNCTION INTO A SHELL WITHIN THE SAME CONTEXT ALONG WITH THE SHELL’S ORIGINAL FUNCTION, ALLOWING THE ORIGINAL FUNCTION TO BECOME MORE RELEVANT IN ITS CONTEXT. THE DESIGN APPROACH FOR SUCH A SPACE WOULD THEREFORE STEM FROM THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND DESIGN ELEMENTS OF EACH OF THE TWO FUNCTIONS.

THIS THESIS EXPLORES THE IDEA OF HYBRIDITY AND QUESTIONS WHETHER TWO FUNCTIONS CAN EXIST IN THE SAME SPACE. HENCE, THE COLLAGES LOOK AT TWO BIZZARE THINGS COMING TOGETHER AND HELPS ONE UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF HYBRIDITY, LEADING TO UNDERSTANDING OF THE BENEFITS OF CREATING A HYBRID SPACE.

THE PROGRAM BECAME A HYBRID OF THE CINEMA, THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE AND CONTENT CREATION. THE DESIGN STRATEGY ADOPTED WAS OF THE DESIGN ELEMENTS AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CINEMA INFORMING THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE AND VICE VERSA. IN THE IMAGE THE MAJOR AND MINOR ADJAGACENCY OF EACH OF THE FUNCTIONS IS HIGHLIGHTED ALONG WITH MIND MAPS SHOWING HOW THE PROGRAM WAS DERIVED FROM THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF CONTENT VIEWING, CONTENT CREATION AND THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE.
AS BUILT ZONING OF GROUND FLOOR, FIRST FLOOR AND SECOND FLOOR SKETCHES OF THE EXISITING INTERIOR OF THE SHELL
CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES OF HOW THE DESIGN ELEMENTS OF THE CINEMA WILL BECOME THE DESIGN OF THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE AND CONTENT CREATION PODS AND VICE VERSA CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES OF THE PHONE FEATURES PEOPLE LOOK AT WHEN PURCHASING A PHONE AS UNDERSTOOD FROM THE ANALYSIS OF THE SADDAR MOBILE MARKET; AND HOW THEY WILL ACT AS “TRANSITION SPACES” BETWEEN DIFFERENT BRANDS SUCH AS MOVING FROM A BRAND WITH LOW BATTERY LIFE TO ONE WITH HIGH BATTERY LIFE ETC. IN THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE
GROUND FLOOR PLAN INCLUDES THE LOBBY, BOX OFFICE ACTING AS THE POINT OF SALES, WAITING AND COLLABORATION AREA, CONCESSION STANDS, RETAIL EXPERIENCE AND 360 DEGREE PROJECTION OF TRAILERS OF FILMS THAT ARE SHOWN IN THE CINEMA WHEN THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE SHUTS DOWN FOR THE DAY.
VIEW AND CONCEPTUAL SKETCH OF THE BOX OFFICE IN THE LOBBY FROM THE ENTRANCE THE BOX OFFICE ACTS AS THE POINT OF SALES WHERE THE CUSTOMERS PURCHASE THE MOBILE PHONES FROM, CREATING THE HYBRID OF HOW THE DESIGN ELEMENTS OF THE CINEMA ARE AIDING THE FUNCTION OF THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE. IN A SIMILAR MANNER SCREENS DISPLAY ADVERTISMENTS INSTEAD OF POSTERS OF MOVIES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BOX OFFICE. THE ADVERTISMENT OF CLASSIC PAKISTANI FILMS ABOVE TOUCH SCREENS TO REGISTER TO RENT THE CONTENT CREATION PODS IS ANOTHER FORM OF HYBRIDITY USING THE DESIGN ELEMENTS OF THE CINEMA TO AID THE RETAIL EXPERIENCE AND VICE VERSA.
