The traditional form of calligraphy has evolved into a contemporary practice under the influence of context. Is there a need for space to evolve in a similar manner? The investigation is about drawing parallels between an art form and a space.

The project explores the elements of calligraphy and how they can be translated into spatial design.

The concept explores the transition from traditional calligraphy to contemporary art from under the strong influence of context. The investigation is based upon drawing parallels between traditional/contemporary paintings and respective spaces. It also highlights how learning has evolved in the current times.

Liaquat Memorial Library is a functional library located around multiple educational institutes. It has 3 floors out of which only the ground floor is functional. Basement is underutilized and the mezzanine is only used for storage. The building has an extremely rigid structure with a lot of columns closely placed together. The idea was to introduce fluidity and movement in a structure which is rigid in terms of geometry as well as activity. Thus, the idea of collaboration and breaking away from tradition is used as a design tool to achieve the desired goal. The two paintings also focus on the idea of freedom and breaking away from tradition which further helped in spatial design.

Shows how the analysis of painting in layers helped in designing the spatial layout and flooring.

The programs are distributed among three levels. Basement level: explores the concept of learning and activities where people can come together and learn craft. It has a workshop area which includes: paper making, calligraphy, painting, letter writing and art of emoji. The next space is gallery which bleeds out in courtyard as well becoming and indoor and outdoor exhibit spaces. The third one is a performance space which has a huge amphitheater in the courtyard which also connects basement and ground level; blurring the boundaries between two levels and indoor & outdoor spaces.

The children’s area comprises of 4 zones: storytelling, collaborative, reading and interactive wall. All these zone focus on the idea of learning through different activities. The repetition of ‘harf’ on glass balustrade subtly incorporates the idea of calligraphy in literal form.

The collaborative area has combines reading and discussion areas. It also has meeting pods which have configuration of 2 and more.

The subtle incorporation of ‘harf’ in screen gives the users an idea of calligraphy as a design inspiration.

The luminaire and furniture selection have hints of letters and organic design.
