Thesis Title:

Transience as a Catalyst for Reintegrating Street Children into Society

Project Title:

Street Children Facility

Location:

Sir Shah Sulaiman Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi

User Group:

Street children from the Lyari riverbed, Creatives, Neighboring Community

This thesis attempts to creatively address the condition of Street Children in the context of Karachi. This growing and overlooked population of children working and living on our streets are susceptible to various types of dangers. Hence, this thesis aims to provide them with an ephemeral stopover facility to explore the ability of transient architectural methods to help bridge the gap between these street children and the community at large. It does so through the use of flexibility in design features and programmatic considerations. According to Rahul Mehrotra, South Asian cities must accommodate increasingly temporary fluxes in their structure and broader ecology to be sustainable. Therefore, transient architecture, ranging from purposely short-lived and multi-use structures, exhibitions, and programs, helps create temporary yet sustained sites for interaction and engagement, catalyzing the process of reintegration.
